A young buck with antlers that didnt even pierce the skin on his forehead entered our doubleman food plot. Like most deer around this time he was edgey, graising picking his head up every 10 seconds to see what was around. Little did he know I was around, I was up about 20ft in a stand. For some reason today Justin and I sat together, it was just one of those days. We sat for a few hours with no activity until he showed up. The deer got within about 15 yards of me, I stood up and quietly grabbed my bow off the tree to my right. The thing about bow hunting is you have to wait for that perfect shot. At full draw, silently I held for what felt like about a minute which was really probably about 20 seconds, thump. I sent one, I sent an arrow through his left shoulder. I shot down to my right so the arrow passed through his lung, it was a good shot, I was confident, I was happy. And took off like a horse out of the gate, sprinting through the woods to my left, snapping the arrow off a tree on his way. I sat for about an hour anxiously waiting to go find him, if only it was that simple. The sun set the rain started. The angle of the shot was above his shoulder and there was no exit wound, there was no blood trail. Small red dots like pins and needles spread out accross 100 yards of wet leaves in the pitch black of night. On my hands and knees with a flashlight in the pouring rain in the dark I crawled around for hours, determined to find this deer. After a hopeless search Dylan offered to come help, to be honest to this day im not even sure he knows how he found this deer. An eyeball glared off his flash light, “GOT IT” he yelled. Fuck yeaaaaa I thought. We dragged it out I gut it for the first time with a knife handmade by an old army ranger. 10:30 I think I finished up in the woods, after 6 hours of tourcher. The next morning I brought it to the butcher shop, got the hide tanned, and my deer cut up. I started hunting at 18, I was 23 at the time of this and finally Deer Meat For Dinner.
